Naming Ceremonies

A Naming Ceremony is a very special celebration of the birth of your child when the new arrival is formally welcomed into the family and the community!

They are usually non-religious and are perfect for families who are not aligned with any particular faith or religion.

Most Naming Ceremonies are held in homes or gardens, but other natural settings such as parks, can also be suitable.

A typical Naming Ceremony might contain:

  • Introduction and Welcome
  • Reading/Poem/Song
  • Promises (can be by parents, grandparents, godparents/supporting friends)
  • Presentation of gift/flower to special people (e.g. grandparents)
  • Blessing/Reading
  • Formal Name Giving
  • Rituals (e.g. Lighting of Naming Candle, Sand Ceremony)
  • Presentation of Certificate

A Naming Ceremony is the perfect opportunity to declare your promises to your child in the presence of family and friends.  It is also an opportunity to formally acknowledge siblings and other relatives and/or adult friends who will play an important part in your child’s life.  You might like to have godparents or supporting adults involved allowing them to confirm their special relationship with your child by sharing promises in front of you and the guests.
